Bainbridge Island, WA Community
Bainbridge Island offers residents a unique community in all of Washington state. Located right in the middle of Puget Sound, people who live here enjoy a mix of Pacific-Northwest natural beauty and every modern accommodation.
If you’re someone who loves the great outdoors but still wants the convenience of nearby cities and the comradery of neighbors, Bainbridge Island, Washington is the perfect place to call home.
The Bainbridge Island Economy
Between 2001 and 2018, the Puget Sound region added more than 17,000 jobs despite the economic downturn that dominated the rest of the country. This doesn’t even include the many workers employed at the various Naval installations throughout the island.
Fortunately, the economy here hasn’t slowed down as it has in so many other cities, either. It’s expected to continue expanding by at least another 2.4% by the end of 2019. Over the next 30 years, as many as a million more jobs are predicted in this part of Washington, as well.
This isn’t too surprising, though, considering that 70% of adults who live on the island have at least a four-year college degree. Almost half of them commute to Seattle or other cities by ferry where they enjoy higher-paying job opportunities. Though, as I’ll cover in more detail later, there are plenty of local businesses that give Bainbridge Island a one-of-a-kind feel that’s all its own.
The Bainbridge Island School District
Bainbridge Island School District #303 is top-rated with an enrollment of about 4,000 students. The average ratio of students-to-teachers is 19:1, which explains why 85% of students are considered at least proficient in reading, and 80% are deemed at least proficient in math, according to the state’s annual test records.

There are five private schools on Bainbridge Island, as well, that cover kindergarten to eighth grade.
Dining and Shopping
Bainbridge Island does not lack for dining options, especially if you’re someone whose palate craves homegrown flavors. Most of the best restaurants are located in the town of Winslow, which also offers impressive views of the sound from its perch on a small hill.
Travel down the town’s main street, Winslow Way East, and you’ll come across restaurant after restaurant that serves the kind of cuisine you’ll talk about for days.
For example, foodies from all over Washington come here try Hitchcock’s tasting menu, with its spread of locally-sourced meats. Even Hitchcock Deli, which features a much simpler menu of mostly sandwiches, is known all over Seattle for being worth the ferry ride.
Another celebrity of the Washington restaurant scene is Mora Iced Creamery where flavors like watermelon sorbet, lavender, pink grapefruit sorbet, mojito, and Mexican chocolate await to satisfy any sweet tooth.
Of course, being so close to Seattle, you won’t have to travel far on Bainbridge Island to score a great cup of coffee. From Blackbird Bakery to the beautiful Pegasus Coffee House, it’s easy to add some pep to your morning step here.
At the other end of the day, Bainbridge Island is home to the following seven wineries, organic distillery, and craft brewery:

Imagine being able to end your days with your local drink-of-choice while watching the sunset over the mountains or heading down to Harbour Public House at the southern tip of the island, where you can enjoy your drinks from a front-row view of the pier. These businesses also make great hangout spots or event locations.
There’s plenty of shopping to do on the island, as well. Winslow Mall is a quaint little shopping center that offers clothes, homewares, children’s items, and more. Petit & Olson and Meli Melo Island Vintage Boutique are just two examples of the many clothing stores on the island that sell fun and fashionable clothes and accessories. If you’re looking for equally unique ways to outfit your new home on Bainbridge Island, you’ll find a treasure trove at Salt House Mercantile where the shelves are equipped with one-of-a-kind housewares you won’t find anywhere else.
Having Fun on Bainbridge Island
You never need to worry about boredom on Bainbridge Island.
Every year, thousands of tourists come to Kitsap County, many of whom travel here specifically to enjoy the island’s many charms. This includes annual art festivals and even “First Friday Art Walks,” where participants tour new exhibits every month.
There’s a film festival, home, and garden show, the “Chilly Hilly Bicycle Ride,” Oktoberfest, Harvest Fair, the Halloween Walk, and so much more to do. No matter what your interests are, you won’t have any problem packing your calendar all year long. These events also make it easy for new residents to acquaint themselves with the island and meet their neighbors.
Aside from the wineries mentioned above, breweries, distilleries, and restaurants, Bainbridge Island also hosts several other attractions that both tourists and locals love to frequent.

Bainbridge Island is only a short ferry ride to Seattle, as well. It generally takes about 30 minutes to make the nearly nine-mile trip, so all kinds of other entertainment options are always within reach. Again, one of the main advantages to living here is how easily you can switch from an internationally recognized metropolis like Seattle to your relaxing oasis on the Puget Sound.
Parks and Recreation on Bainbridge Island
Vogue Magazine once called Bainbridge Island, the “Nantucket of the Pacific Northwest.” In part, this was a reference to the island’s many boutique stores and fantastic restaurants.
However, it also paid homage to the fact that Bainbridge Island is a nature lover’s paradise.
While there are more than a dozen different gyms to join on the island, you won’t necessarily need them to get in a good workout. The community is crisscrossed with many different hiking and biking trails. They take residents right through gorgeous landscapes, so if the exercise doesn’t get your heart pumping, the incredible scenic views will.

Cycling is a significant activity here. Bainbridge Island Cycle Shop is a bit of an institution. Not only will you find exactly what you need for the kind of biking you plan on doing, but the onsite bicycle mechanics are also able to answer any questions you have and make expert recommendations.
If you’re more interested in taking your activities into the Sound, stop by Exotic Aquatics Scuba and Kayaking, where you’ll find everything you need to have a great time in the water.
For just about everything else you would need to explore Bainbridge Island’s natural playground, take a trip to Wildernest, where a passionate staff can help you make the right decisions about everything from warm clothing to climbing equipment.
Not surprisingly, this island community is home to a large number of boating enthusiasts, too. Many of the homes here come with their own docks, but there are also ten different marinas on all sides of the island. So, no matter where you find your dream home, you’ll have no problem keeping your boat nearby.
Homes for Sale in Bainbridge Island
As we touched on earlier, many residents leave the island every day for work, mainly traveling to Seattle. Jobs often pay more there, but the Bainbridge Island housing market is always much more affordable, too. Typically, it’s about six months behind any rising prices in Seattle, as well.
In any case, whether you work locally or in another city, you’ll have plenty of options to choose from when looking for the perfect home. Even though it’s only 27 square miles, Bainbridge Island is Kitsap County’s second-largest city, with a population of about 25,000. So, there are always homes for sale here.
Generally speaking, the island is a higher-end market. The average price for a home in July of 2019 was $961,000, up almost 19% from the year before.
Still, there are always many homes on Bainbridge Island that are listed for far less. There are also open lots to consider. Many of the lots here are very affordable and offer incredible benefits like privacy, access to nearby beaches, beautiful natural surroundings, and incredible views.
All of the reasons, as mentioned earlier, to love this community also make for a thriving real estate market. In 2018, Kitsap County house prices reached five-year highs thanks to the island’s popularity. Most newly-listed homes were purchased in less than a week.
