Silverdale, WA Community

There’s a lot to love about living in Silverdale, Washington.

After all, more than 20,000 people – and counting – call it home.

Residents here enjoy all the desirable benefits of living on the gorgeous Puget Sound while being surrounded by all the modern perks of a good-sized city. On any given day, they can catch a movie, head to a first-class restaurant, or watch the game with some friends.

At the same time, they’re never far from the legendary natural surroundings of the Pacific Northwest.

The Silverdale Economy

Silverdale is the second-largest city in Kitsap County. It’s also located just 20 minutes north of the actual largest, Bremerton, which has a population of more than 40,000. Combined, the two cities make up the Bremerton-Silverdale Metropolitan area, which is home to the majority of Kitsap Peninsula residents.

Bangor Trident Base is nearby, as well. Like many other places in Washington, this military presence brings lots of dollars to local businesses here.

As a result, the economy in Silverdale had remained steady over the last decade, even when it struggled elsewhere in the country. This past year, job growth went up by 1%, a trend that is expected to continue for the next decade by 36.5%. That’s especially exciting when compared to the average job growth projected for the rest of the U.S., which is just 33.5%.

The average income in Silverdale, $31,823, also outpaces the national average, $28,555. Similarly, the median household income here, $59,260, is far better than the country’s average of $53,482.

Most careers in Silverdale are connected to the following industries:

  • Retail
  • Health Care and Social Work
  • Public Administration

Though there are plenty of businesses here, many residents commute to Bremerton or other cities for work. Silverdale is also a popular place for retirees who may work part-time or take on seasonal jobs throughout the year.

Dining and Shopping in Silverdale

People drive to Silverdale from all over Kitsap County to do their shopping or grab a bite to eat. The city offers so many options for both that you’ll never have to go far to do either.

For example, between Kitsap Mall, Silverdale Plaza, The Trails at Silverdale, and Silverdale Village Shopping Center, you’ll find popular restaurants like Chipotle and Buffalo Wild Wings right along with name-brand stores like American Eagle and Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Of course, Silverdale is also home to plenty of unique stores, as well.

Among many others, there’s Purpose Boutique, a women’s clothing store that carries more than 20 brands run by survivors of human trafficking. A percentage of each purchase goes to Rescue: Freedom International, as well. You can also host a “Purpose Party” to shop with your friends while you sip bubbly.

When it comes time to decorate your new home, make sure you take a trip to Silverdale Antiques. There are some incredible pieces there, many of which reflect a distinct Pacific-Northwestern aesthetic.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for a selection that includes some more modern options, check out Eclectic Home Furnishings.

There’s a very passionate artistic community in Silverdale, too, evident by shops like Artist’s Edge, Lisa Stirrett Glass Art Studio, and Knit2gether. Whether you’ve always been creative or are looking to start a new hobby, these stores are stocked with the supplies you need and even opportunities to take classes.

Silverdale isn’t just the major retail center of the Kitsap Peninsula. It’s also known for a wide range of restaurants.

Given its location on the Puget Sound, many of these restaurants specialize in seafood. Yacht Club Broiler is an exceptionally famous example. Aside from a menu that includes clam chowder, roasted garlic prawns, and Pacific king salmon, the restaurant is right on the Dyes Inlet, providing a beautiful view while you eat.

Locals love the Oak Table Café, too. Since 1981, this family-owned business has built a reputation on recipes made from scratch using the freshest ingredients available. They’re well-known for their incredible buttermilk pancakes and ice cream crepes, though their lunch and breakfast menus are full of delicious options.

At Azteca Mexican Restaurant, you’ll find a massive selection. Although it’s now a beloved franchise throughout Washington, the first restaurant opened its doors back in 1974 after its founder emigrated here from Mexico. Slowly but surely, he brought over the rest of his family – including his mother and her traditional recipes – all of whom began working at his restaurant. Today, it’s the place to go in Silverdale when you’re craving Mexican cuisine.

If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll probably return again and again to Bella Bella Cupcakes or Blu Berry Frozen Yogurt. Both attract admirers from all over Kitsap County for their one-of-a-kind creations.

Those who enjoy the craft-beer culture of Washington will feel right at home in Silverdale. There are three well-known breweries here:

  • Cash Brewing Company
  • Silver City Restaurant & Ale House
  • World of Beer Silverdale

There are over a dozen more just in nearby Bremerton and Poulsbo, too.

When it comes to grocery shopping in Silverdale, there’s Trader Joe’s, Safeway, and Asian Market, to name a few.

Having Fun in Silverdale

You’ll never get bored living in Silverdale.

However, while this part of Washington is well-known for outdoor activities, there are plenty of other ways to have a good time here.

Residents are continually heading to All Star Lanes & Casino. Even if you don’t like to gamble, it’s a fun place to have a good time playing in the arcade or bowling. It has excellent restaurants like Ozzie’s Place and All Star Diner, as well. All Star Lanes & Casino is also the go-to place in Silverdale for concerts and other live entertainment throughout the year.

The city hosts a lot of fun events, too, like the Whaling Days Festival in July or the Kitsap County Fair & Stampede in August. You’ll want to experience Viking Fest held every year in nearby Poulsbo. The city is well-known all over Washington for its Norwegian roots – one of its many nicknames is “Little Norway” – which this annual festival pays tribute to with many different events and attractions. In recent years, tens of thousands of people have traveled to the town to partake.

That’s one of the best parts of living in Silverdale. Although there is a lot to do in town, you can also travel to places like Bremerton, Poulsbo, and Port Orchard to explore all kinds of other options. Even Bainbridge Island is only about 40 minutes away.

Parks and Recreation in Silverdale

If you like being active or simply getting outside to enjoy nature, you’re going to love living in Silverdale. The city is covered in parks and trails that are beautiful throughout the year, especially when the cherry blossoms bloom. Many of these areas also offer gorgeous views of the Olympic Mountains and Dyes Inlet.

For example, Silverdale Rotary Gateway Park has plenty of paths for walking and running throughout its 12 acres. It also has an impressive skate park, bathrooms, and dog park, making it a fun destination for the whole family.

Although much smaller, the two-acre Silverdale Waterfront Park doesn't lack for fun features. Residents of Silverdale regularly visit for its beach access, playground, sheltered picnic area, and gazebo. It’s a hotspot for parents who have young children as the park is perfect for playdates.

If your idea of a good time involves the water, there’s the Port of Silverdale. Aside from its boat ramp and pier, this phenomenal facility also offers a park for kids and public restrooms. Throughout the year, there are several events put on by the Kitsap Sailing Foundation, Clam Island Rowing, and the Olympic Outdoor Center. So, whether you’re a complete novice or an experienced boater, whether you like sailboats or paddleboats, there are always plenty of options for getting out on the inlet and having some fun.

Homes for Sale in Silverdale

People love living here, so it should come as no surprise that houses for sale in Silverdale tend to move very quickly. Many of the homes here also cost more than comparable versions in some of the smaller towns of Kitsap County because of their location on Dyes Inlet and all of the ways to have fun in Silverdale.

Fortunately, your money will go a long way. Most houses in Silverdale have at least three bedrooms with two bathrooms. Many were built relatively recently, as well, which isn’t always easy to find in other parts of the Kitsap Peninsula.

A lot of these homes also come with views of the Olympic Mountains, the Puget Sound, or both. One thing a lot of people like about living in Silverdale is that they can enjoy the natural surroundings of the Pacific Northwest without sacrificing the best aspects of being part of a community. So, even though you might choose a home in a traditional suburb, you’ll never forget that you’re living in Washington’s most beautiful county.

There are a few open lots available throughout the city, as well. So, if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, you can always build it.
