Olalla, WA Community

If you’ve always dreamt of living among the one-of-a-kind natural surroundings of the Pacific Northwest, close to the Puget Sound but with plenty of room for yourself, then Olalla, Washington would be perfect.

The small town is situated right on the coast of the Sound in southeast Kitsap County. People who live here enjoy easy access to nearby cities like Bremerton and ferry access to Seattle.

At the same time, they love knowing that they have a little slice of this incredible part of Washington all to themselves. If you want to be part of a close-knit community in rural Kitsap County, it’s tough to think of a better place than Olalla.

The Olalla Economy

With its location in southern Kitsap County, Olalla’s economy has always benefited from those of the surrounding cities. Like much of the county, this means it’s seen its job market increase by about 1% over the past year. Similarly, Olalla residents have enjoyed the security of a relatively stable economy for the past decade or so, even though the rest of the country hasn’t always seen the same conditions.

The future is bright, too. Olalla’s job market is expected to continue growing by 36.5% over the next decade, which is considerably better than the 33.5% the rest of the country can expect.

On average, residents here make $30,633 a year with median household incomes reaching $68,977. These numbers look even better when you consider that they are just $28,555 and $53,482, respectively, for the entire U.S.

As residents can so easily commute to other parts of Kitsap County for their jobs, the workforce here is diverse. However, most residents work in:

  • Construction
  • Manufacturing
  • Retail
  • Health Care and Social Work

Some residents even commute to Seattle every day via the Southworth Ferry Terminal located just 20 minutes to the north.

Dining and Shopping in Olalla

Al's Grocery and Pizza is a bit of an institution here. It’s where the locals go for most of their grocery needs, but it’s also a fun restaurant to visit for amazing Italian food and beautiful views of Puget Sound. There’s even a beer garden for enjoying your favorite brew with your neighbors whenever the weather is gorgeous. As Al’s Grocery and Pizza are right on the shore, they even rent kayaks for anyone looking to get a little exercise before tackling one of their delicious pizzas.

For any other grocery-related needs, you can head up to Southworth Grocery in Southworth or Fred Meyer in Port Orchard.

From April to October, many residents opt to do much of their grocery shopping at the Olalla Valley Farmers Market held in the field adjacent to the Olalla Bible Church. Every Saturday, local farmers and artisans assemble between 8:30 am and 2 pm with their locally grown produce and other goods.

Another location your taste buds will come to love is Olalla Valley Vineyard & Winery. Just a mile inland from Al’s Grocery and Pizza, the tasting room is open Wednesdays to Sundays. However, as the owners live on-site, if you need some of their fantastic wine on Mondays or Tuesdays, you have to call ahead to pick up your purchase. The incredible setting also makes Olalla Valley Vineyard & Winery an excellent place for hosting special events in Olalla.

There are also plenty of dining options in the surrounding area. For example, if you want a couple more Italian options, you can drive to Seabeck Pizza in Port Orchard or Massimo Italian Grill in Gig Harbor. Both are about a 15-minute drive away.

Port Orchard is also home to Shari’s Café and Pies. Though it’s famous throughout the Pacific Northwest for its award-winning pies (many of which are made with locally sourced ingredients), the rest of the menu here is equally impressive. It’s definitely worth the drive for the thick-cut French toast, the signature Tillamook cheddar burger, or a one-pound T-bone steak.

Taqueria El Rey is stationed nearby if you’d prefer Mexican food. In 2018, it won the award for “Best Food Truck in South Kitsap” as voted on by the readers of the Kitsap Daily News. Except for Sundays, it’s open every day from 10 am to 9 pm, making it a great place to drop by for lunch. Along with the traditional staples of Mexican cuisine that you would expect, the menu also includes shrimp ceviche, “super fries,” and California burritos.

When it comes to shopping, most residents of Olalla drive to either Towne Square Mall or South Park Village in Port Orchard.

Having Fun in Olalla

One of the best parts about living in Olalla is that you will enjoy all of the fun of living in rural Kitsap County while never being far from plenty of other opportunities to enjoy yourself. As Olalla is located right on Highway 16, it’s easy to head in either direction to have a good time.

You’re also not far from the ferry up in Southworth, which can take you directly to Vashon Island or the Fauntleroy neighborhood of Seattle. The former is well known for both its many natural attractions and its cultural sites.

Of course, Seattle never lacks for things to do, either. Living in Olalla means you can enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the Puget coast and, about an hour or so later, enjoy a Seahawks game or a meal at Spinasse.

Fortunately, there’s lots to do in town, too. For example, every year, there’s the Olalla Americana Music Festival. People from all around Kitsap County travel here to listen to bluegrass, blues, country, jazz, R&B, and folk music. There’s also a berry pie contest held during the festival, a tradition that goes back almost 30 years.

Another example of locals coming together for a good time is the annual Polar Bear Plunge. The event begins with the firing of a canon, letting participants know they can now jump from the Olalla Bridge into the water below.

These and other fun celebrations are put on by the Olalla Community Club. For more than 80 years, this group of volunteers has been dedicated to preserving and maintaining the town’s heritage and fostering a sense of community.

The group’s actual clubhouse can also be rented out for various events. It’s well over 100 years old and one of the most prominent and beloved buildings in this town.

Parks and Recreation in Olalla

With Bremerton only about 30 miles to the north and Seattle just a ferry ride away, living in Olalla doesn’t mean you have to entirely forego the many comforts of living in a larger city.

At the same time, it also means you’re always surrounded by the legendary beauty of the Pacific Northwest. No matter where you are in town, you can almost always see the Sound, and you’ll never be far from the lagoon.

Olalla is one of the very few places in the entire county that has a sandy beach. Located at Anderson Point Park, it’s an excellent place for getting in the water. It’s a prime location for beachcombing, as well. You’ll frequently come across clams, oysters, and moon snails right on the beach. It’s also not uncommon to see seals, sea lions, and otters in the water, either.

Even on days when you can’t get in for a swim, the walk along the beach is still worth it for the views of Vashon Island and Colvos Passage.

Dogs love living in Olalla, Washington, as much as the people do. It’s full of wide-open spaces for them to explore. There’s also Bandix Dog Park. Whether your four-legged friends need a little more space for their exercise, or you want to give them a bit of variety, this park offers plenty of room to run and an endless amount of scents for them to investigate.

There’s a fenced-in area, as well as a trail that runs almost ¾ of a mile through the woods. The thick forest surrounds the path, so many owners feel comfortable taking their dogs off their leashes, knowing they can’t get very far.

Another fun way to get outdoors and enjoy the natural surroundings of Kitsap County is to head down to Trophy Lake Golf and Casting in Port Orchard. Its 18-hole course features gorgeous landscaping with plenty of elevation changes that make for great play and incredible views.

Many players would tell you it’s worth it just for a meal at the Dry Fly Café inside the course’s clubhouse. The building’s architecture and decorations make it feel much more like a fishing lodge so that it’s
