Keyport, Washington is a small town in Kitsap County with a lot to offer. It’s the perfect place for people who love living in this part of Washington. Aside from its location right on the water, residents here have a fantastic sense of community. They take a lot of pride in this beautiful area and love enjoying it with their neighbors.

If you want to live among the Pacific Northwest’s natural charms while still partaking in all of the fun of small-town life, Keyport has precisely what you’re looking for and more.

The Keyport Economy

Like most of Kitsap County, Keyport’s job market has grown by about 1% over the past year. It’s expected to climb another 36.5% over the next ten years, too. This is especially impressive, considering that average growth is anticipated to be 33.5% for the rest of the country.

This tends to be the case for residents of Kitsap. The economy has been relatively stable for the past decade, even when it wasn’t in other parts of the U.S. or even Washington.

Most residents of Keyport work in one of the following industries:

  • Retail
  • Construction
  • Manufacturing
  • Health Care and Social Assistance

Though Keyport is a small town of only about 600 residents, many of them work in other parts of Kitsap County, hence the diversity of their careers.

Dining and Shopping in Keyport

The Keyport Mercantile & Sandwich is both a fun restaurant and a small grocery store that will cover most of your needs, including a selection of wine and beer. Their restaurant’s menu includes everything from calzones to salads to pizzas and an array of incredible sandwiches. It’s also where many locals congregate to watch sports or catch up with one another. When you first stop in, take a minute to look over all the photographs of Keyport over the years that dot the walls. It’s a very cool display of the town’s history.

You’re also only a 15-minute drive from other grocery stores in Silverdale, like Trader Joe’s and Safeway. If you head the opposite direction, it’s about the same distance to Poulsbo, home of Marina Market. This unique grocery store is known for an impressive selection of Dutch and Scandinavian items, as well as food from all over Europe. It’s also where you’ll find the Licorice Shrine, with more than 500 different varieties from which to choose.

Whenever you don’t feel like eating in, take a trip to Casa Mexico. It’s the go-to spot for authentic Mexican food, especially on “Taco Tuesday” and the all-day happy hours on Sundays. There’s also live music on Fridays and every first and third Saturday of the month. All the fantastic food here is even made from locally-sourced ingredients, and there is an excellent selection of wines and beers from nearby breweries.

Another restaurant in Keyport that you’ll visit again and again is Torpedo Town Diner. It offers an extremely cozy atmosphere for enjoying a menu full of diner-style food influenced by cuisine from the 50s. Just like with Casa Mexico, this diner prides itself on keeping their ingredients local. Fortunately, this won’t limit your options in the least. You can order everything from a breakfast burrito to an Italian salad to a Cubano sandwich and much more. There’s also the Wednesday Steak Special to look forward to, and a regular Captain’s Plate special that features a changing combination of seafood.

Both restaurants are just a few blocks from the bay, too, so they’re great for cap off a fun day on the water.

For most of your shopping, you can head down to the Kitsap Mall in Silverdale or The Trails at Silverdale. These malls are full of clothing stores, restaurants, and just about anything else you could need.

Having Fun in Keyport

Keyport is a city rich in naval history. It earned the nickname “Torpedo Town USA” because of the U.S. Naval Torpedo Station, which has been here for more than 100 years. The town is also home to the Naval Undersea Museum, a popular tourist attraction that displays everything from the bathyscaphe Trieste II (a submarine that submerged 20,000 feet) to a recreated control room of the USS Greenling that visitors can enter. Temporary exhibits are also displayed throughout the year, making the museum an exciting place that even locals visit again and again.

For the most part, having fun in Keyport involves getting outside and enjoying the beautiful surroundings, whether on land or in the water. The community regularly comes together for fun events, too.

For example, every September, there’s Keyport Fest, a celebration of the town that includes music, activities for children, a classic car show, and much more.

This and other events are put on by the Keyport Improvement Club, a group of residents who are dedicated to making life in this pleasant town as enjoyable as possible. This entails taking on initiatives to improve the city through town cleanups and working with officials from other parts of Kitsap County. It’s one of the many examples of just how much people enjoy calling this town home.

Of course, Keyport is also located near some other cities, including Poulsbo and Silverdale, so there’s always plenty to do in the area. You can even drive 30 minutes to the ferry on Bainbridge Island and then take that over to Seattle. Fun day trips to the Emerald City could include watching a Seahawks game, enjoying an incredible Italian meal at Il Corvo, or walking through the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture.

All Star Lanes & Casino in Silverdale is a popular destination for residents in the mood for a good time. There’s bowling, an arcade, two restaurants, a café, table games, and poker. The venue hosts concerts and other shows throughout the year, too.

You’ll also live just a short drive from two different golf courses. There’s Rolling Hills Golf Course down in Bremerton, or you can head to White Horse Golf Course up in Kingston. Both are gorgeous courses with natural beauty framing every fairway. White Horse is known to be one of the toughest courses in the entire Northwest, which makes it a lot of fun for experienced players. It also features a fantastic restaurant with a patio situated right on the 18th hole. Rolling Hills is more relaxed, but it still offers enough of a challenge to make it enjoyable, no matter what level you’re at.

Parks and Recreation in Keyport

The pleasant summers in Keyport make it a great town for people who love to spend time outdoors. Winter here is relatively mild, as well, so residents are still able to stay active and enjoy being outside.

If you’re a fan of boating, you’ll love living right on the Kitsap Peninsula National Water Trails (KPNWT). Jump in your boat or kayak and explore the Puget Sound with all of its many bays, coves, and inlets. The Port of Keyport was just updated ten years ago so that every slip in the marina now has power and water.

When the tide is out, locals love walking along the beach. You’ll often see crabs and other wildlife doing the same thing. No matter what season, the coastline always features beautiful views of Liberty Bay and the Keyport Lagoon. This is also one of the best places in the entire Pacific Northwest for bird watching, which is saying something.

You can take a stroll through Keyport Saltwater Park, which is located right on the water. There’s also Central Park near the city’s northern shore. Both are outfitted with picnic tables, making them fun places for get-togethers or just enjoying lunch with a view. Thanks to the efforts of the Keyport Improvement Club, these parks are very well maintained.

Homes for Sale in Keyport

Even though Keyport is a small town, there are usually plenty of options on the local real estate market. However, because of its ideal location, and all there is to do in and around the area, these houses tend to attract buyers reasonably quickly.

Most of these homes are three or four bedrooms with two or three bathrooms. The great thing about Keyport is that the prices tend to be significantly lower than they are for homes farther up the peninsula. You’re never far from any of the attractions those cities have to offer.

You’re also not going to have to look far for homes in Keyport that offer the kinds of views associated with this part of Washington. Whether you want a house where you can see the Sound, would prefer to live in a neighborhood, or even if you want something with a bit more privacy, you’ll find it here in Keyport.

There are still some open lots here, as well. So, if you don’t find the perfect home here, you can always build it yourself.
