Bremerton Economy
The economy in Bremerton, Washington is very healthy, with an average household income of $48,757. Future job growth is also looking great at an estimated 37.2%, which is well above the national average of 33.5%.
Aside from nearby Seattle, where many residents work, another reliable source of revenue for many Bremerton businesses comes from the Navy’s presence. The city hosts the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard – which is almost 130-years old – and a satellite site of the Naval Base Kitsap. These installments had often kept the Bremerton economy secure even when the rest of the country was struggling. Their ongoing operation requires both military personnel and civilian employees, too.
For example, “The Shipyard the Nation Needs” project scheduled for the 20s to renovate the shipyard is expected to bring in as much as $5-billion worth of business to the city. This, combined with the continuing growth in Seattle, gives residents a lot to look forward to as far as economic stability goes.
The Bremerton School District
Though Bremerton offers plenty to do for younger people, it’s also become a beautiful city for couples with children because of its school district.
For parents of young children, there are six different elementary schools from which to choose:

- View Ridge Elementary School
- Naval Avenue Early Learning Center
- Crownhill Elementary School
- West Hills S.T.E.M. Academy
Bremerton also offers two different middles schools:

- Mountain View Middle School
The city’s public high school, Bremerton High, has an enrollment of about 1,150 students.
Overall, the Bremerton School District offers a student-to-teacher ratio of about 1:16.
There are also several private schools in the city, including:
- Crosspoint (K-12)
- Christ the King Lutheran School (Pre-K-8)
- Kitsap Adventist Christian School (K-8)
- Silverwood School (K-6)
Finally, Bremerton is home to Olympic College, a community college that offers bachelor’s degrees in filmmaking, information systems, nursing, technical management, and organizational leadership. Aside from the 330-acre campus in Bremerton, two sister sites help serve more than 12,000 students.
Dining and Shopping in Bremerton
Bremerton offers residents most of the chain restaurants that are popular in Seattle and throughout the rest of Washington.
However, the city is also full of one-of-a-kind spots that leverage the unique flavors of the Pacific Northwest.

For those who enjoy the pleasures of cooking from home, the grocery stores here won’t disappoint. They cater to almost every preference. Aside from the standard varieties, there are also plenty of specialty stores, like Asian Market International, where the shelves are stocked with unique items that traditional recipes often require. You’ll also want to stop by the Bremerton Farmers Market, for an impressive selection of local ingredients, as well.
The city isn’t lacking for fun shopping spots, either. Like so much of Kitsap County, Bremerton has a lot of character, as many of its local businesses illustrate.
For example, there’s The Candy Shoppe¸, which has a delectable treat for every type of sweet tooth. F.R.O.G. Soap is another unique location that has a large following among residents. The store sells only handmade beauty products for those who are environmentally conscious. They even won the “Washington State Recycler of the Year Award” because of their commitment to sustainable practices.
When looking for more everyday items, residents go to East Towne Center and Perry Avenue Mall. There are also national chains like Walmart and Target.
Lastly, because of the city’s age and local history, Bremerton is home to a collection of antique shops. So, when decorating your new home, if you want to add items from a specific era, be sure to do a little perusing at places like Revisited Antique Gifts, Olde Central Antique Mall, and even the Port Orchard Public Market for all kinds of cool finds.
Fun Things to Do in Bremerton
Given Bremerton’s location and history with the Navy, it should come as no surprise that many of its most popular tourist sites are also linked to this wing of the Armed Forces. However, many of these attractions are regularly visited by locals, as well. These include:
- The Puget Sound Navy Museum
- USS Turner Joy Museum Ship
- Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Memorial Plaza
Another hotspot for locals and tourists alike is the Bremerton Boardwalk. No matter how long you live here, you’ll probably take a stroll down this stretch at least once a season. It’s a great place to get a little exercise while taking in the coastal view. If you have young children, they’ll probably never get sick of watching all the different boats go by throughout the day. There are also plenty of fun little shops along the boardwalk, from restaurants to art galleries and more.
Throughout the summer, this area is also home to the “Rock the Dock” concert series. A great example of the communal feel in this city, the series is every Saturday at 5 pm and completely free.
If you’re a film buff, you’ll love living nearby “History Rox Theatre,” which plays movies from yesteryear across all genres. The theatre, which was built in 1941, also hosts live music and other events within its time-capsule interior. Again, it’s just one more example of how much pride the city takes in its history and love it has for offering residents one-of-a-kind experiences.
That being said, the city is also just a 30-minute ferry ride from downtown Seattle. So, there are always countless other options for having a good time. If you’re in the mood for anything from a Seahawks game to an artistic attraction like the Museum of Pop Culture, you won’t have far to go.
Parks and Recreational Areas in Bremerton
Whether you’re a lifelong nature enthusiast or you have young children with endless amounts of energy, you’ll love all of the outdoor activities available to residents of Bremerton.

Of course, living in Bremerton means you’re right on the Puget Sound, so if you are looking to get in the water, go fishing, or take out a boat, this is a great city to call home. The Bremerton Marina is the perfect place to keep your boat, or you can join the Freedom Boat Club, which lets members rent from a large fleet of vessels.
One of the great things about Bremerton is that you’re close to Seattle whenever you’re in the mood for cosmopolitan activities, but you’re also not that far from Bainbridge Island, which feels like it’s a world away. There, you’ll enjoy no shortage of hiking and biking trails, all of which grant you incredible views. There are also some great scuba sites along its coast and countless places from which you can launch your kayak. If you prefer a larger vessel, there are ten marinas located throughout the island for storing your boat.
Best of all, you don’t have to pay the much higher real-estate prices of Seattle or Bainbridge Island to enjoy what these cities have to offer.

With so much to love about Bremerton – including a promising economy – it’s no wonder that the city’s population continues to grow.
Fortunately, houses in Bremerton remain incredibly affordable, especially when compared with the prices mentioned above in surrounding cities.
The average price is just a little over $307,800. That’s up 6.2% from last year, but it’s expected to climb another 2.5% by 2020. So, now would be a great time to start house-hunting if you’re interested in making this beautiful city your new home. Most houses are only staying on the market for about six weeks before they’re purchased.
It’s not hard to see why. There’s a variety of homes in Bremerton, including plenty of options for singles, couples with and without kids, and empty nesters who are looking to downsize without giving up luxury.
